The Black Pirate (1926) |

The Alloy Orchestra (2004)

Don’t miss this silent film classic, accompanied live by an
original score written and performed by the Alloy Orchestra. The
Black Pirate (1926/US/ Albert Parker/84 min) is a
fast-paced swashbuckler of the silent era written by and starring
Douglas Fairbanks in the title role. One of the first films shot
in color, The Black Pirate, combines a
gripping plot with some of the most gorgeous footage of the of the
silent screen. Two of Fairbanks’ most memorable scenes are
in this film – sliding down the sail of a ship on the point
of a knife and the totally surreal attack of the underwater army.
The Alloy Orchestra, a three-man band from Cambridge, Massachusetts,
writes and performs live accompaniment to classic silent films.
Now in their 12th year, the Alloy has brought silent-film viewing
back to life on the big screen. Returning from their first European
tour and wowing audiences wherever they go with their energetic
and percussive music played on an outrageous assemblage of peculiar
objects, are Roger Miller on synthesizer, Ken Winokur on junk percussion
and clarinet and Terry Donohue on junk percussion, saw, accordion
and banjo. They’re an “absolute must-see” in Roger
Ebert’s book.
